As an adaptive cross platform CSS grid system, Less Framework came with a lot of hopes pinned on itself after Bootstrap; one of the most popular HTML, CSS and JS frameworks for developing responsive, mobile first projects.

Less uses standards-based CSS3 media queries, making itself compatible with the most common browsers ; Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer 9 and of course the huge, ever increasing array of devices; Android Phones, tablets, iOS devices like the iPhones, iPads, iTouches and of course the Windows Phone series.

Both share the same purpose; enable Cross-Platform, Cross – Device ease of use of mobile apps and websites.

Less a dynamic stylesheet language is influenced by Sass and is now developed using JavaScript. The Less Framework is licensed under the MIT license and available at GitHub as an open-source.

The Less Layouts for More

This CSS grid system of the framework includes 4 layouts and 3 sets of typography presets based on a single grid. Armed with this kitty, the Less Framework transforms into a versatile CSS grid system for designing adaptive websites.

Adapting To All Layouts

Less Framework is a single grid based layout, composed of 68 px columns with 24 px gutters. The amount of columns and the width of the outer margins change from layout to layout. The three sets of typography pre-sets are aligned according to the layout of choice to a 24px baseline grid.

An Innovative Solution

  • The idea is to first code the Default Layout -992 px
  • CSS3 media queries are then used to code the Child Layouts or the Dependent Layouts
    • 768 px
    • 480 px
    • 320 px
  • The Default Layout will be available to the browsers that do not support media queries
  • Child Layouts would be made available according to the device size and the browser
  • It goes without saying that the Child Layouts inherit all styles from the Default Layout, so development is fast and the result is harmonious

Less Framework is very simple, basic and intuitive. It avoids the use of ‘over intelligent stuff’ and refrains from overwhelming the user or the developer.

The latest on the block though; for Cross-Platform designing is Frameless Grid for designers who are through with fluid grids.
